Celtic started the new season impressively against Dundee United. They dominated for the whole match and the scoreline doesn't do the performance justice. Celtic first half performance was excellent but in terms of goals we were getting very little luck. Henrik Larsson opened the scoring with an excellent swerved shot from inside the box. Chris Sutton was about to shoot when a defender knocked it away from him to Larsson. Larsson hit it first time round the keeper into the net. In the second half Celtic lost a goal early in one of the few mistakes in a good defensive performance. During this half Celtic looked a bit tired however this is to be expected after a fast and furious first half. Just before Celtic went into the lead again Celtic had a perfectly good Chris Sutton goal chopped off by the linesman. The goal which won the game was after a chaotic goalmouth tussle between the two teams after several shots just missed Chris Sutton tapped it in from a Stephane Mahe shot. As Martin O'Neill commented after the match every player put in full effort and it shone through in the performance. Stephane Mahe was very good in crosses and set up the goal. New signing Joos Valgaeren was solid in defence and, along with the other defenders, gave Celtic the stability they have been missing in the close season. Generally, it was a good team performance. Henrik Larsson, however, showed us what we had been missing and well deservedly was awarded the Man of the Match. I could get used to this! |
