Swedish striker Henrik Larsson completely healed the emotional scars of his horrific broken leg in Lyon with a goal to help Celtic comfortably brush aside the Luxembourg minnows on their return to European club competition. Last October he broke down in agony in the second round of the Uefa Cup with a career-threatening injury, but he has come back to star for his country at Euro 2000 and for Celtic - with one goal from their first two league games. And he announced his return to the big stage with their third goal after Slovak Lobu Moravcik had killed the tie off with an impressive double.

Moravcik and Bobby Petta too had something to celebrate in their first starts of the season as they replaced Israeli Eyal Berkovic and Stilian Petrov respectively in Martin O'Neill's starting 11. They repaid the manager's faith with goals to put Celtic in a commanding position in the first round qualifying tie and almost certain to be in the draw for the first round proper of the Uefa Cup in two weeks' time.

It was always going to be stroll for the Glasgow giants over the amateurs of Jeunesse and they threatened in the early stages with Petta, in particularly, out to impress. The former Ipswich winger tried to pick out Chris Sutton after just two minutes, but goalkeeper John van Risswisck gathered off the top of the striker's head.

The confident Petta again took the initiative just four minutes later when he left two men in his wake before unleashing a powerful right-footed effort that the keeper stretched to push over his bar. But Celtic were pushing forward for the away goal and in the 10th minute space opened up for Sutton 22 yards out and he tried to beat the keeper with a curling right-foot shot which flew just wide of the upright.

The visitors continued their efforts to prise the home defence open and with Sutton and Larsson again showing a good understanding they began to wear them down. Sutton's persistence almost paid off in the 22nd minute when he got to the byline before picking out Mjallby, who was free in the box, but the big Swede could not find the power and his header was comfortably saved by Van Risswisck.

Two minutes later and Celtic produced their best move of the game so far when a one-two between Sutton and Larsson created space for the £6million man to try a right-foot effort that keeper did well to save low to his left. Moments later and the duo almost linked up again to open the scoring when Larsson got to the byline and pulled the ball back, but the keeper again saved well at the feet of Sutton.

The former Chelsea and Blackburn star went close again in the 26th minute when he rose to meet Moravcik's corner, but his powerful header sailed just over the crossbar.

It was inevitable that Celtic would take the lead sooner or later, but they had to wait 36 minutes for it to come. Larsson, who was making his first appearance in European club competition since breaking his leg in Lyon last October, slid the ball into the path of the on-rushing Moravcik inside the area and he calmly slotted the ball past Van Risswisck and into the bottom corner.

Larsson should have capped his return to the big stage with a goal in the 44th minute when Moravcik found him in space, but his effort from the edge of the area was brilliantly pushed over by the Jeunesse goalkeeper.

Celtic were looking to kill the tie off after the restart and Sutton was given an opportunity to do just that in the 49th minute when Mjallby played the ball onto him, but the England striker's right-foot effort went just wide. The Luxembourg outfit were posing very little threat at the other end of the field as Celtic continued to dominate and only the heroics of Risswisck in the opposition's goal prevented them from going further behind after 52 minutes.

Moravcik rode one challenge before sending Petta down the flank and the winger brilliantly picked out Larsson in the box, and it seemed certain he would score with a downward header, but the goalkeeper saved superbly with his feet.

But there was little he could to prevent Celtic adding a second in the 58th minute when Sutton played a perfectly-weighted ball between two defenders into the path of Moravcik, who fired emphatically past the keeper from the edge of the box and into the bottom corner.

The tie was completely killed off just three minutes later when Sutton and Larsson combined on the edge of the area and the Swede controlled the ball with his right foot before placing past Van Risswisck with his left.

Larsson was replaced by Tommy Johnson immediately after his strike and the former Aston Villa man was inches from adding a fourth when he lobbed the on-rushing keeper in the 76th minute, but his effort went agonisingly over the bar.

But another goal did arrive in the 81st minute when Petta got the goal his performance warranted when he cut through a group of players before unleashing an unstoppable drive past Risswisck to send the travelling green and white army partying into the night.
